- Abstract
Comedy in performance, in space, is primarily understood as a genre where people attempt to evoke laughter from an audience through a medium, whether it be literary or performative. Alternatively, comedy can be regarded as a means by which reality is filtered to generate a more humorous approach to the absurdities, difficulties, and unpredictable events we encounter in our everyday lives. To approach these events with a sense of humour, we must be open to the possibilities of unexpected outcomes, both as a performer and as an audience member. This thesis aims to explore how vulnerability is experienced within 'comedic' spaces, due to expectations of these spaces, and how that vulnerability can result in humorous narratives and events when expectations are broken. Through diagrams, axonometric representations, and sections, we will explore the ways that architects and designers set certain expectations within spaces, and the ways that comedy breaks those expectations.
