The work in this thesis consists of a study of some reactions related to approaches possible to the total synthesis of camptothecin (I), namely (a) modified Friedlander condensation and (b) decarboxylation studies for the ABC system plus (c) alkylation and (d) deketalization studies aimed at a CDE ring system.A fold out sheet at the end of the thesis contains structures of the important compounds mentioned in this thesis.
