- Abstract
Ontario's history is dotted with the rise and fall of multiple colonial settlements established all over the province during the 18th century. These deserted and decaying structures, often isolated from civilization, are beautiful and eerie at once. Why does abandoned architecture lure many urban explorers? What qualities are attractive to photographers, artists, architects and other professionals? With no persons dwelling in these towns, the observer has defaulted to using their imagination to evoke a possible theory to explain the livelihoods, culture and decline of such places. An initial mapping and site analysis of selected towns will begin to clarify some elements concerning the abandoned; through the recording of location, terrain and past industries. This thesis intends to dissect the tangible and intangible qualities of abandoned sites leading to a final project that explores an unconventional practice celebrating the progression of material decay.
